Job Title: Library Associate

Position Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday 9:30 AM-5:30 PM

Wage: $20.00-$21.00, depending on experience

Start Date range: January 2025

JOB SUMMARY

Do you enjoy providing excellent customer service to community members and value library services? This position serves as library support staff, assisting patrons and performing circulation tasks.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • At least 2 years customer service experience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Associates or Technical degree and at least 1 year experience working or volunteering in a library or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency in Spanish or Ukrainian – eligible for bilingual pay differential

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Customer Service

  • Staff customer service desk, answering questions regarding circulation, patron accounts, directions, events, and library services in person, over the phone, and via email
  • Create and manages patron accounts
  • Check materials out to patrons using the Integrated Library System
  • Assist patrons with basic computer issues and with using the self-checkout station 
  • Answer basic reference and reader’s advisory questions and refer them to Specialists and/or Librarians when appropriate
  • Collect damage/lost fines and copy/print fees 
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of library policies 
  • Maintain a welcoming environment for patrons, including addressing code of conduct violations and other behavior issues

Circulation

  • Check in and organize incoming materials from the return desk, book drops, and acquisitions
  • Manage materials holds
  • Search for and retrieve in-house materials
  • Assist with collection maintenance, including weeding and mending
  • Work with circulation reports and overdue notices
  • Prepare the library for opening and closing
  • Maintain a neat and uncluttered workspace and service desk
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise judgment in non-routine situations
  • May assist in training future circulation employees
  • Troubleshoot basic computer/printer issues at service desk
  • Process deliveries and prepares photocopies and faxes
  • Prepare daily and weekly cash counts

Other Tasks 

  • Shelve materials, read shelves to maintain proper order, and shift and straighten materials
  • Participate in professional development
  • Substitute for programs for all ages, with appropriate training and support
  • With approval of Library Director, may receive special assignments, including planning and facilitating programs 

Working Conditions

Continual and demanding contact with the public. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team on tasks that require attention to detail. Must work with all age groups from toddlers to senior citizens.

Physical Demands 

Locate and obtain books and materials of a wide variety of shapes and sizes; stand or sit at a computer workstation for extended periods of time (high manual dexterity, limited movement or change of position); reach library materials at high and low levels (bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, turning, and reaching above head using a stool required); use of repetitive motion of hands and arms; lift and carry materials which may weigh up to 45 lbs. (boxes of books, equipment, furniture), push/pull up to 100 pounds on wheeled book carts, and do speed work with hands and forearm rotation; visual acuity needed to read computer screens, library material spine labels, etc.; may be exposed to dust and changes in temperature.
